The Microsoft Volume Activation Management Tool (“VAMT”) is part of Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 and allows organizations to manage the activation of their Windows Vista and Longhorn Server computers using Multiple Activation Key (MAK) keys.
A Multiple Activation Key will perform a one time activation of PCs against Microsoft. Once the computers are activated they require no further communication with Microsoft. The number of computers that can be activated with a specific MAK is based on the type and level of the organizations’s volume license agreement with Microsoft.
MAK Independent Activation: Each computer individually connects and activates with Microsoft either online or via telephone
MAK Proxy Activation: One centralized activation request on behalf of multiple computers with one online connection to Microsoft
Activation Status: Ability to determine the activation status of Windows Vista and Longhorn Server computers in the environment

Local reactivation: Enables reactivation of computers, that has been previously activated using MAK, after rebuild or reimage by applying the Confirmation Id

￭ Deactivation.

A MAK may be used to activate up to 100 computers or a single device. If a MAK is used to activate more than 100 computers it will perform the 100-computer proxy activation with additional computers and fail during the Single Computer Proxy Activation process.
VAMT will not allow activation requests for more than 100 computers, but will allow the registration of single MAK keys.
To ensure Microsoft is able to accurately determine the status of computers registered with a MAK key the MAK key is associated with a unique Confirmation Id. A Confirmation Id remains the same for all computers in the same MAK key.
MAK Key Limitations:
An existing MAK key can be temporarily stored, if needed, and used to activate the same computer.
